​Humpback whales are a remarkable species often spotted off the coast of Costa Rica. Particularly they are found in the waters around the Osa Peninsula during the months of July-November (peaking in August/September). Humpback whales weigh 40 metric tons and can grow up to 17m (55ft long).

 

Costa Rica is unique in that it hosts two distinct populations of humpbacks—one migrating from the northern hemisphere and another from the southern hemisphere—making it a prime location for whale watching. They are loved for their impressive size, breaching, tail slapping, and other fascinating behaviors.

Conservation status: Endangered

One of the most cherished parts of the waters out here in the Matapalo area are the sea turtles you can find swimming in the water. You are most likely to spot them if you get out on a surf board! 

These turtles, which can grow up to 4 feet in length and weigh over 300 pounds, are named for the greenish color of their body fat.

Costa Rica is an important nesting site for green sea turtles, especially from July to October. The country plays a vital role in conservation efforts to protect these endangered creatures, working to mitigate threats such as poaching, habitat loss, and climate change.

Bottlenose dolphins are commonly seen in the coastal waters of Costa Rica, particularly near places like the Osa Peninsula. These highly intelligent and social dolphins are known for their playful behavior, often seen riding the waves of boats or leaping from the water. Costa Rica's rich marine ecosystems provide an ideal habitat for bottlenose dolphins, who thrive in warm, coastal waters where they hunt for fish and squid. The boat and kayak tours in the area offer a great chance to observe these charismatic creatures in their natural environment.

Known for its distinctive dorsal fin that resembles a rooster's comb, roosterfish are renowned for their strength and agility, making them a thrilling target for anglers.
